Voice Teaching and Midwifery

I have been thinking a lot about my role as a voice teacher.  I shudder when I hear or see others describe themselves as “voice builders”—as if there were no voice previously?!?  Still others who look on their job as filling a blank slate.  Again, not my style.  I have never met a human blank slate!

Instead, I consider my work to be freeing and even shaking loose all the beauty and brilliance that is already there.  Helping the voice to grow, to have new life and endless possibilities.  I did not make the voice and I am not responsible for its various assets. . .my responsibility is to help it come to life, to gain ever more freedom and growth.  Not too far from helping an already-created being into the world.  It is an exciting and even holy process!
